As ethanol blending rises in Indian petrol, many drivers are reporting symptoms that were previously less common in everyday conversations: difficult cold starts, knocking, rough running, and concerns about corrosion in older fuel system parts.

Reports of ethanol-related corrosion have raised questions about insurance coverage. ICICI Lombard flagged that using E20 in a car certified only for lower blends could be treated as negligence in a claim dispute — though the Press Information Bureau has clarified that using compliant E20 petrol does not by itself invalidate a motor insurance policy. Mechanics in Kerala and Tamil Nadu have reported corrosion-linked repairs, including one Chennai case where engine failure from water contamination cost the owner close to ₹4 lakh.
Older vehicles are the most exposed. The public concern is not only performance but long-term maintenance quality and whether the fuel station or fuel blend is the trigger for the issue.
